Jeff Shelton, Architect
This exuberantly colorful house sits brightly in its wooded surroundings. Its curved walls and mosaic tile roof are constructed of fireproof insulated concrete forms. They enclose a compact and very functional floor plan for a young family. The spaces are imaginative and playful, filled with multicolored tile, local wood cabinets and sculptural plaster details.
Rooms are defined by custom tile, and the theme throughout the house is the local flora and fauna. Butterflies, California quail, honeybees and passion flowers pave the bedrooms and baths. Poetic phrases or international flags mosaics are featured on stair risers. The plastered walls and ceilings often undulate with integral plastered shelves and niches. The plaster also keeps rooms bright with reflected natural light, even in the shaded setting. Sinuous steel railings and architectural details are powder coated with bright colors for another layer of color.
All physical description aside, this home is a joyful space. To live here is wild, to be a child here is magical, and just to visit is unforgettable.
